Learn to Fly with us!

We offer training towards all certificates and ratings from the Private Pilot License all the way through to an Airline Transport Pilot License. Flying with Texas State Aviation is safe, efficient and best of all fun and affordable. Our instructors are experienced pilots with many years in the aviation industry.

We’re conveniently located centrally in the state of Texas, 20 minutes south of Austin and 30 minutes north of San Antonio on I-35, San Marcos is a small town ideal for flight training. Texas offers some of the best weather for flying, allowing for year-round training.

The San Marcos Municipal Airport (KHYI) is a former U.S. Military Base (Gary Army Air Corps Base) from WWII. As a result, we have lots of ramp space, 3 large runways, and room to grow. The runways are all lighted for night operations, and numerous types of instrument approaches are available for training and actual use. The CAF Centex Wing is located on the field, so there are some very interesting aircraft in residence and visiting.

With all that room, it’s still an uncrowded airport, so there’s not much time sitting on the ground waiting. Currently, the airport has an operational Control Tower in Class D Airspace. Easy to work with and the student learns how to deal with Air Traffic Control from the start.

Texas State Aviation is an FAA approved Part 61 Flight School and Part 141 approved ground school based in San Marcos Texas. We were founded in 1996 by industry experts with backgrounds from other aviation training organizations, both local and international.

While we don’t offer direct financial aid, financial aid for pilot training is available through several different plans.

We also work with Austin Community College’s Continuing Education Department. Some of those credit hours can be transferred towards a full 4-year degree at Texas State University, also conveniently located in San Marcos.

Our school is located in its own hangar on field, with classrooms, offices, break-room, a small pilot shop, Wi-Fi access and more. Feel free to relax, take a load off, chat with other students and pilots. We’re pretty easy-going here. If you want to feel nervous while you fly, the nearby huge San Marcos Outlet Malls are ready for your wife to visit while you train.

Texas State Aviation is authorized by the Immigration Department to sponsor I-20 (M1) visa applications for foreign students.
