Our Location
Air Safety Flight Academy is located at the North Texas Regional Airport, located 60 miles north of Dallas. North Texas Regional Airport is built on the site of the former Perrin Air Force Base. Perrin Air Force Base began as an Army Air Field and was the first basic flying training school to become operational after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Perrin Field was home to the 32nd Flying Training Wing from September 1943 to October 1945, graduating over 10,000 pilots, including cadets from Brazil, Mexico, Guatemala, The Philippines and Ecuador.
The North Texas Regional Airport is one of the largest airports in the region. Airport facilities include:
Three runways:
- 9,000 x 150 foot parallel runway
- 8,000 x 150 foot parallel runway
- 2,277 x 60 foot crosswind runway
Four instrument approaches:
- ILS/LOC RWY 17L
- VOR/DME RNAV RWY 35R
- VOR/DME A
- NDB/GPS RWY 17L
State-of-the-art control tower operated by L-3 Communications
Student dormitories located on the airport
Fire Department located on the airport
$17 Million in capital improvements currently underway
Wide open airspace (no other flight school within 30 miles)
The major advantage to having multiple runways and having every type of instrument approach right on our airport is that you do not have to travel to other airports for instrument training. This saves our students a great deal of time and money. We have estimated that by having all the approaches we do each student saves $5,000 to $6,000 during their training versus training at other schools. Safety is also another major advantage. Being that our aiport is a controlled airport, all practice instrument approaches our students fly are in a controlled environment. This means our air traffic controllers provide their services thereby increasing the level of safety during this phase of training.
Texas Weather - Perfect for Flight Training
As for weather, with over 320 days VFR flying days a year and an average annual daytime temperature of 73 degrees, North Texas Regional Airport has the long standing reputation as being the "best-of-the-best" when it comes to flight training locations, dating all the way back to 1941.
